Members of the Legends Of Theatre Association unveiled their debut play, Gaasasika Ku Lwa, written by theatre legend Christopher Mukiibi, at the National Theatre on Sunday, December 31, 2023, to usher in 2024.
The show commenced precisely at 7:00pm with a low turnout, but as the play progressed, more attendees joined.
The play portrays a family that consistently mistreats and abuses their housemaids and workers. It is after enduring severe mistreatment that one of the workers decides to retaliate, altering the entire plot.
Commenting on the play and the audience turnout, Kiyimba Musisi, the public relations officer of the group, stated that they chose this theme due to the prevalent habit of mistreating workers, emphasising that the public seems indifferent.
Musisi added that the group aims to return to the roots by producing educational plays reminiscent of those from the 1980s, noting that contemporary theatre has deviated from its fundamental role in shaping society.
"When we assessed theatre, we realised significant changes have occurred. The educational plays that once shaped society are no longer prevalent, and reintroducing them to the stage is imperative," said Musisi.
He urged Ugandans to reconsider embracing theatre, emphasising that it is crucial for rebuilding the country's lost heritage.
Musisi promised that in 2024, many other plays from the 1980s and 1990s would be featured by the group.
The play stars renowned actors, including Christopher Mukiibi, Dickson Zizinga, Benon Ssebunya, Ibrahim Ssematimba, Swaib Serugooti, Fatuma Nakiwala, Zaali'embikke, Kiyimba Musis, Wahida Nakanwagi and Kiyimba Kasagga.
It is scheduled for additional performances on January 1, 6, 7, 13, and 14, 2024, at the National Theatre.
