Legendary Congolese gospel group Makoma have arrived in Uganda ahead of their long-awaited concert this Friday (March 6) at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in the capital Kampala as part of New Vision's 40th anniversary celebrations.

They are back in the country for the first time in 25 years.

Part of the celebrated gospel ensemble — Nathalie and Pengani Makoma — landed at Entebbe International Airport from France towards midnight on Tuesday and received a warm welcome, ready to reconnect with their Ugandan fans after many years away from the local stage. The rest of the group will be jetting in soon.

Known for their electrifying performances and timeless hits such as Napesi, Butu Na Moyi and Mokili Ekobaluka, the group promised an unforgettable night of worship, praise and creating memories this Friday.

Speaking shortly after arrival, members of the group expressed excitement about performing in Uganda again and being part of the celebrations marking 40 years of New Vision.

They said fans should expect an energetic and spirit-filled show that will celebrate faith, music and the enduring bond they share with Ugandan audiences.

“This will not just be a concert but a powerful night of worship and celebration. We are excited to create beautiful memories with our fans as we celebrate 40 years of New Vision."

The concert, organised by Vision Group in partnership with Pacific Events will take place at Kololo ceremonial grounds.

For many gospel music lovers, Makoma’s return to Uganda marks a nostalgic moment, as the group dominated the gospel music scene across Africa in the early 2000s.

With preparations in high gear and anticipation building among fans, Friday’s show is expected to be a memorable highlight of the year-long celebrations marking four decades of excellence by New Vision.

The Makoma were last in Uganda a quarter-of-a-century ago and they are excited for a great experience with food, weather, fellow gospel musicians and other interactions.

Hailing from Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Makoma were formed in 1993 by Tutala Makoma.

Initially, they called themselves 'Nouveau Testament', which means New Testament in French.

Tutala and his siblings Nathalie, Annie, Pengani, Duma and Martin were later joined by a friend called Patrick Badine. They grew up in a musical household, singing in church and at home, blending their Congolese roots with whatever sounds they picked up.

Civil unrest in DRC forced them to flee, first to neighbouring Rwanda, then to Europe, settling in the Netherlands and later the UK. But through it all, their faith and music kept them going.

Theirs is a story that resonates with many Africans who have faced displacement or hardship, making their songs feel personal — like they are singing about their own struggles and triumphs.
