Winnie Kirabo is a recent Top 40 under 40 nominee based in Barcelona under her fashion label Wyne Kirabo. She talked to Maureen Nakatudde about her fashion journey.

Who inspired you to join the fashion and design industry?

No one inspired me, but I joined it in a bid to find myself. I was first a model with De la Diva Models, Kampala in 2011, then Crystal models from 2012 to 2014.

In 2015 Kirabo started her fashion brand under the name Black Beauty, which used to be her childhood nickname.

In December 2015, Kirabo relocated to Spain. In December 2017, Kirabo joined the University of Girona, Spain to study fashion. This consequently caused her to rebrand under the name Wyne Kirabo.

What is the mission and vision of the brand?

Our vision is to offer a journey where exclusivity, quality and values are merged through the union of cultures, to dress elegant and empowered women.

What is the most rewarding thing about being a fashion designer?

I can imagine a design and bring it to life: it feels like a superpower. It's such a rewarding feeling when people appreciate my work.

This is shown through the accolades given to me and appearances from both local and international television and radio stations in addition to all social media platforms.

What are some of the achievements?

In 2022, I was recognised as the best-emerging designer in African women's wear by Abryanz style and fashion awards, Uganda. The general public acceptance of my work and the appreciation that they keep showing is an achievement.

What are some of the challenges?

Our main challenge is majorly fabric sourcing. Other than that, I think we have been lucky to have positive feedback and all that good stuff.

If I want to be a fashion designer, how do I start?

You should be convinced that it is what you want because there are some challenges you have to overcome, especially in the beginning when not everyone is seeing your vision. Besides that, just start and make small strides and before you know it you will be some kilometres further.
