On the evening of Friday, June 27, 2024, Papaz Spot in Makindye was transformed into a haven of storytelling as Godfrey Kajubi Kibijigiri, widely known as Kibijigiri, took the stage for his emotionally charged concert, My Journey.
Renowned for his lyrical depth and moral storytelling, Kibijigiri used the concert to reflect on his personal life, career, and the social issues he passionately addresses. The night opened with the First Grade Band, whose crisp instrumentation set the tone for a soulful evening.
The audience was treated to stirring performances from Kadongo Kamu legends Matthias Walukaga, Gerald Kiwewa, and Willy Mukabya, who were met with thunderous applause. Their presence added weight to the night and celebrated the enduring legacy of Kadongo Kamu.
Dressed in a simple yet symbolic outfit, Kibijigiri began his set with the poignant ballad Toolbox, a song that humorously yet thoughtfully explores the contents of women’s handbags. From there, each song unfolded like a chapter of his life story, delving into themes of poverty, injustice, perseverance, family values, and the dignity of honest work. The crowd responded with reflective silence and occasional enthusiastic cheers.
The stage design was minimalist—no flashy visuals, just tasteful lighting in warm amber and soft blues, creating a nostalgic and earthy atmosphere that echoed the rural roots of the genre.
The sound was impeccable. Kibijigiri’s vocals were crisp, every guitar note resonated clearly, and the First Grade Band was perfectly balanced in the mix. Smooth transitions between acts kept the energy flowing, making for a professionally executed and deeply moving concert experience.
