Kapa Cat fills in Garbage Time

Song Review: Just in Case - Kapa Cat

Where on the planet has Kapa Cat been? And how was this irrepressible creature able to stay silent so long? Her latest single is Just in Case and it packs the usual irreverent attitude as her previous material, with lines like:

‘Because the way you look/ This is not salary/If you did me good/You can be my Canary’.

Only our good Lord and possibly the aforementioned Canary knows what she was going for with that line. I mean, she can’t have been referring to that Canary, can she?

Kapa Cat’s attempts at music have always reminded me of ‘garbage time’ from the night clubs of old. This was a time slot in night clubs which often featured dancehall music with a bit of an underground edge to it. The music played during these slots featured artistes like Ragga Dee and Emperor Orlando.

Garbage time slots were hugely popular in night clubs. They had an everyman feel to them, and the folks that had let the R & B slot go by would jump at this chance to shake what their ancestors had bequeathed them.

Just in Case is not really as nonsensical it sounds. Kapa Cat is singing about the transactional nature of today’s relationships, and somewhat inevitably, emphasizing the fact that one should not expect anything else. And she uses a dancehall groove to deliver this message, holding nothing back.

Kapa Cat’s music is often brutally honest, and is almost a form of social commentary. In all her songs, she has something to say, with no frills. This approach often ensures that there is usually no one like her in the industry, and helps her standout by a mile.

I think the last single she dropped was the equally provocative Sikyo.

I speak for everyone when I say I am delighted she is still releasing music.
