Fashion model and environmentalist Judith Heard has launched a tree planting campaign through her foundation, the Judith Heard Foundation (JHF).

The 50 Million Trees for Africa initiative is poised to foster sustainable development and ecological awareness among the youth, commencing with educational institutions across Africa.

At Kasangati High School in Gayaza, Heard ceremoniously planted signature trees to kick-start the campaign.

Engaging with students, she talked about the paramount importance of nature conservation and tackling the challenges posed by climate change.

“My vision extends far beyond mere education. I want to see a future where every child actively participates in safeguarding the environment. By instilling a sense of responsibility and appreciation for nature in the next generation,” Heard said.

Subsequently, she visited the Kasangati Town Council community, where she met  local dwellers, local government leaders and monitored the progress of the thousands of trees she planted there a year ago.

Heard is spearheading a call-to-action mobilisation, open to partnering with heads of governments, international organisations, civil society activists, and the general public to bring this afforestation movement to fruition envisioning a greener world by 2050.

The JHF 50 Million Trees for Africa Campaign in Schools aims to nurture environmentally-conscious leaders and foster social and environmental solutions for a brighter future, beginning at the grassroots level of education.

The project addresses deforestation and climate change, endeavoring to create green spaces that serve as educational hubs for environmental stewardship.

The campaign has started with educational workshops in participating schools, enlightening students about the significance of trees in combating climate change. Additionally, tree planting events will be organised with local communities, accompanied by technology integration for tracking the growth and impact of planted trees.

Heard is among the dignitaries to be honored at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards in Los Angeles on March 6, 2024. This event celebrates young leaders driving climate and social action.

Heard is also Miss Environment Africa and the Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment in Uganda.
