Ugandan jazz maestro Isaiah Katumwa is set to host a highly anticipated concert, celebrating a remarkable three-decade-long career in music.

In a conversation today with 94.8 XFM , Katumwa reflected on his journey, revealing the struggles, triumphs, and relentless determination that have defined his path.

Walking the path before cars existed

One of the most striking themes in Katumwa’s reflections was his emphasis on perseverance. He drew a powerful analogy:

"One hundred years ago, did we have cars? No. We walked. Even if there were a few, there weren’t many. Yet, people still connected. How? They walked."

This philosophy has been central to his journey. Long before the luxuries of modern transportation and digital connectivity, Katumwa embraced the grind. He recalled times when he would start walking days in advance just to reach his destination.

A time before the internet: The struggle for recognition

Katumwa’s career began in an era without the internet, email, or digital music platforms.

"In 1995, there was no internet. No tutorials, no music stores, no online schools," he said. Musicians had to rely on raw talent, persistence, and physical presence to make an impact.

His early days were marked by rejection. He shared how radio stations initially turned down his music.

"I even brought my music to radio stations, and they rejected it," he recalled. His breakthrough came unexpectedly when the BBC played his songs, an emotional milestone that still moves him today.

From Bars to Big Stages: The evolution of a Jazz legend

Katumwa’s journey wasn’t glamorous at the start. While still a student—balancing academics and leadership roles, he was already performing nightly in bars.

"I was the head boy in school, the tough guy, but at the same time, I was working from 5:00pm to 2:00 am, Monday to Monday," he shared.

His relentless hustle paid off. Over the years, he released albums annually, steadily building his reputation. Today, he is celebrated not just for where he is, but for how far he has come.

"The validity of my celebration is in the context of the journey I’ve walked," he said. "It’s not just about where I am now, but how far I’ve come."

The Upcoming Concert: A celebration of three decades

As Katumwa prepares for his upcoming concert, emotions run high. Reflecting on his 30-year journey, he admits to being overwhelmed by the memories, both the struggles and the victories.

"It’s hard to put into context," he said. "Some of these moments feel like yesterday, but they were twenty years ago."

The concert promises to be more than just a performance; it will be a tribute to resilience, passion, and the power of music to transcend barriers. For Katumwa, it’s a moment to honour the long walk, one that began with rejection but now stands as a testament to unwavering dedication.

Fans can expect an unforgettable night of jazz, nostalgia, and celebration as Katumwa takes the stage, not just as a musician, but as a symbol of what it means to persevere against all odds.

Don’t miss Katumwa’s milestone concert, a celebration of 30 years of music, passion, and relentless determination.
