After Jovan Luzinda became famous following his 2018 love song, Emboseera (loosely meaning juicy), older women started approaching him with offers, which included marriage and sex for money. The offers seemed bearable until one of the women he had an affair with started abusing him sexually and physically.
In an interview on Friday, May 17, he expressed regret, advising young male artistes against falling victim to cougars.
"Free money is bad since it almost made me lose everything I have in life. I was almost losing my own life because of a woman who seduced me with money. Those women are bad. They even bribe hospitals to give them wrong HIV test results to get what they want out of you yet they are positive. Some are spreading HIV to young artistes. My fellow men who are young and aggressive about success, be careful. Do not fall into the trap of these women. There is no such thing as free money. Instead, work hard and get little, but when it’s your own sweat without strings attached," Luzinda said.
Furthermore, Luzinda's father's words have come back to haunt him.
How it started
In 2015, 21-year-old Luzinda's mother urged him to try his luck in the New Eagles talent search programme. The New Eagles, led by Geoffrey Lutaaya, were born out of the Eagles Production split.
Despite his father's opposition, Luzinda joined the music industry, with his mother's encouragement and support.
Lutaaya, a seasoned musician, supported Luzinda's musical career. Lutaaya composed Luzinda's debut track, Mutamivu, and also taught him how to sing, recorded his music, and found venues for him to perform, such as weddings.
Later, Luzinda left The New Eagles and went solo. His 2018 hit, Emboosera, thrust him into the spotlight. And that's how his woes with older women escalated. They took his song personally.
"I regret the day I met these older women. They come under the pretext of helping us, young artistes, but they have bad intentions. After I made the hit song, which was my breakthrough project, the women started hunting for me from all corners. They would pay brokers money in a bid to access me," Luzinda started.
He said one day, a certain woman gave him money while he was performing on stage. She asked him to find her behind the stage for private talks, saying she had business for him.
"Beneath the money, she slid a note with her contacts and name. We started communicating. She showed me love like no one else had. She made me believe that I was better than anyone else in the whole world," Luzinda said.
"That weekend, she called me asking me if I had had lunch. I said no. There and then, she sent me sh1m for lunch. She lavished me with expensive gifts, which included cars, perfume and hard cash. She always rented for me expensive apartments. I never lacked fuel in my car, " he said.
However, there was a catch to it. She, however, limited his movements and tracked his phones.
"I did not have freedom of speech. She behaved like a man in the house. She was married. She always theatened me if I let slip of our affair. She always wanted to know my plans. She insulted and warned every woman of my age that I would talk with. She beat me countless times. She started tarnishing my name to kill my market so that I can love her alone. She paid a lot of money to people in the industry to end my career," Luzinda revealed.
He said he went through unbearable pain at the hands of the older woman.
"She would use me as she wanted. She made me do a lot of things against my wish. She never considered my feelings at all if I wanted intercourse or not. She forced me to have sex with her at anytime she wanted," Luzinda said.
He remained tightlipped on the woman's identity for security purposes.
"She warned me against mentioning her name. Everything was done in darkness," Luzinda said.
He, however, revealed that she was a big person in the country.
"These women are at times victims of domestic violence so they run to young men to search for love and revenge on their lovers," Luzinda added.
