South African-based Ugandan socialite Zari Hassan has said she grew up hoping she would marry a rich man until she realised it was going to take a lot of work.
“I used to think I would marry a rich man and wear gold. But I realised it wasn’t easy. I wanted a good life. I got the motivation to say I don’t really come from a rich family, but it was my responsibility,” she said while appearing on BBC Swahili.
Zari also addressed her critics who have taunted her about her younger husband Shakib Lutaaya’s age.
She maintained the date she has always claimed as her date of birth - September 23, 1980 - saying all her family, peers from school and the village know it. Zari also emphasised that Shakib is over 30.
“People say you are dating a child, he is almost your son’s age. He is not even 18. My husband is a fully-grown man. He is not a child,” the socialite said.
Zari’s first attempt at marrying rich was 2011 when she asked for 300 head of cattle from the late Ivan Ssemwanga – 100 for each of their three children.
The high-profile introduction ceremony however, never materialised into a wedding. Ssemwanga passed on in 2017. In 2023, Shakib gifted her only a Quran. So Shakib married rich.
