Perfect lighting sets the mood for the kitchen and turns it into an inviting, functional space.

Sheldon Ashaba, an electrician and lighting designer with Ayodele Innovations Ltd, says several kitchen lights serve different purposes.

For example, task Lighting directs light to specific work areas, such as countertops, stovetops, and sinks, to facilitate tasks like chopping, cooking, and cleaning. Here, you can fix spotlights and these come in different designs and sizes.

Andrew Mbabazi, another lighting designer adds that task lighting ensures safety and effectiveness during food preparation.

You can also use under-cabinet lights, which are mounted under cabinets or shelves to illuminate countertops for additional task lighting.

Ambient and Accent lighting

Annet Kabugo, proprietor of Crystal Euro Led Lightings in Kira Municipality says these lights illuminate the entire kitchen.

They help set the mood and create a welcoming atmosphere. Ambient lights also brighten up dark corners. Ensure the bulbs or Led lights you pick, offer the ‘day light’ effect.

This means, whenever you enter your kitchen it should be as bright as day light. If it is dark, then change the lights.

On the other hand, accent lighting is used to highlight specific features or areas of interest in the kitchen. These can include; artwork, architectural details and cabinets. Therefore, the lights are fixed on those elements to add depth and visual interest to the kitchen.

Pendant and recessed lights

Pendants and recessed lights hang from the ceiling, above islands or dining areas, to provide focused illumination and add a decorative element. Pendants serve both functional and aesthetic purposes; acting as task lighting while enhancing the kitchen's visual appeal.

Another type are the recessed lights, also installed in the ceiling illuminate the kitchen.

In a large kitchen, you can use chandeliers to provide ambient light. You can also utilize natural light from windows to reduce the reliance on artificial lighting during the day.
