Setting up a dream home can be a special journey for newlyweds.

There are several décor decisions to be made and these can be overwhelming more so, if the budget is tight.

However, as a couple, there is a variety of affordable ideas you can work with and decorate your home without skimping on style.

Consider the minimalist style. Declutter, organize and spruce up your space.

Add plants to create a feel of nature in the room.

Mariah Kiwagama, an interior designer with Amari Interiors says that a small space can be cosy, chic and functional as well.

Play with the furniture

Doreen Natukunda, an interior organizer advises to curve out niches with furniture while uniting the rooms. For example, in the living room, opt for an L-shaped sofa to maximize the space.

You can also add a round coffee table that has a small footprint. For any additional seating, bring in a backless settee or upholstered bench.

If you have an empty corner or bare wall in the dining, turn it into a cosy nook.

Mirrors are magical.

Additionally, for a big dose of symmetry, blend the sofas and chairs with matching pillows. This will give the room a distinctive look.

However, ensure the house receives plenty of natural daylight. Open the curtains keep the windows open and let the house ‘breathe’.

Enrich the décor with wall art, plants

Natukunda, who also makes and sells wall art, says the pieces fill spaces with character. They also add visual interest.

When art is creatively arranged, it makes the home feel more natural and casual thanks to the different wood tones and textures. These warm up the small space.

Feel free to enhance the look by adding an indoor plant or two in basket (s).

In the bedroom and corridor, you can add a wall gallery.

However, pay attention to the frames you use. They should be interesting lest you overwhelm the eyes hence ruining the space.

Squeeze in some storage

You can fit storage in narrow idle spaces. It can be floating shelves on either side of the bed, in the study, corridor or living room.

If the corner is too dark, add wall-mounted lights and use small baskets underneath. These can be used to store blankets, toys and other items from around the house.

“Floating shelves free up floor space and make the best storage in cramped spaces,” Kiwagama says.

If the shelves are short, consider adding another beneath each, to rest phones, keys, glasses and antiques.

Mirrors have the magic

Mirrors are so magical.

“Place antique mirrors at either side of the living room, dining, corridor and bedrooms. They will create an illusion of depth and space,” Natukunda suggests.

You can further enhance the look in one of the corners by adding a woven basket or a console table beneath the mirror. In the bedroom, add a side table and lamp for a warmer look with more reading light.
