In recent developments concerning funding for the arts industry, a significant sum of sh13b has been allocated to support artistes.

The State Minister for Microfinance and Small Enterprises, Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, made the announcement of the support, which is aimed at alleviating the financial burdens of  artistes and facilitating their growth.

"We have devised plans to empower our artistes. Collaborating with figures like Kenzo and Ragga Dee, we aim to uplift our artistic community out of poverty and provide them with the resources they need," he stated.

Kasolo outlined initiatives such as constructing studios and living spaces, with the possibility of acquiring the Serene Suites Hotel, Kampala for artistes' use.

Furthermore, he revealed that an additional sh5b would follow, bringing the total allocation to sh10b for UNMF. Meanwhile, an earlier sum of sh3b had been earmarked to address issues within the UNMF.

The initiative has, however, sparked both praise and criticism within the artistic community.

Among the recipients of the funds is the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), headed by Eddy Kenzo, which has been at the centre of debate. The UNMF claims to champion the interests of artistes in the country, yet it has faced opposition from groups like the Uganda Musicians Association (UMA).

Tensions escalated when Phina Mugerwa, who represented  UMA,voiced her frustration over the disparity in funding allocation.

She contested the UNMF's authority and alleged ulterior motives behind its actions.

Phina further lamented the lack of support for UMA despite submitting proposals to the Government.

Kasolo assured her that all artistes would receive assistance, regardless of affiliation, and pledged to review their proposals in an upcoming meeting.
