GNAA celebrates Uganda's Independence in style in Canada

As Ugandans from all walks of life proudly celebrated their country’s 63rd Independence last Thursday, Gisha Nankunda Arts Association (GNAA), an arts and culture group serving East Africans and Caribbean community in Canada, in conjunction with the Ugandan High Commission in Ottawa debuted in raising the Ugandan flag at Toronto City Hall on October 9, in a fun-filled style to mark Uganda’s Independence celebrations. 

Running under the theme “Unity and Diversity”, the momentous occasion attracted a sizeable number of members of the Ugandan diaspora, community leaders, City of Toronto Local leaders and friends of Uganda to celebrate the country's rich culture, history, and achievements.

The hosts of this exciting celebration said the flag-raising ceremony served as a powerful symbol of unity, solidarity, and pride, highlighting the strong ties between our communities.

In attendance were City of Toronto Councilor Chris Moise, as chief guest, Hellen Kayiza Kasozi, a representative of Uganda High Commission Ottawa, Counsel Ojok Acii (Rep. for Acholi Community), Daphne Murunga (Tooro Canadian Associate Co-founder & Director @ AMARA Girls Initiative), Tony Muzira (Busoga Region Representative) and Pastor. Eddie Jjumba.

Muzira in his speech “All of you know that my grandfather, the first Kyabazinga of Busoga, was the first vice president in Uganda, so it is important for me to attend this event representing the people of Busoga as we raise Ugandan flag. This occasion reminds us of how far we have come as a nation from colonial rule to self governance from struggle to strength. As Busoga community in Toronto, this moment is not only a celebration of our shared heritage but also reconnection with the contribution we continue to make home and here in the diaspora."

Gloria Gift Nankunda, the founder and executive director of GNAA said, “We're thrilled to share that GNAA, with support from the Ugandan High Commission in Ottawa, successfully raised the Ugandan flag at Toronto City Hall on October 9th, marking Uganda's Independence Day.”

She adds, “A huge thank you to the Ugandan High Commission in Ottawa under the leadership of Amb. Alan Kajik, for their support and guidance in making this event possible. We're grateful for the opportunity to promote the arts and multicultural exchange and understanding between Uganda and Canada.
