It is a month to the Makoma concert when the band will celebrate New Vision’s 40th anniversary, and anticipation is already high. For the Gospel musician extraordinaire Gabbie Ntate, the group remains one of Africa’s most influential acts.
“They have been around for so long. Although most of us in the younger generation don’t fully connect with their music, they are great singers,” she says. Ntate recalls growing up loving Makoma songs even when fans misunderstood the lyrics due to language barriers.
“We loved and danced to their music even when we didn’t understand the words or sang the wrong lyrics,” she noted.
She credits Makoma for shaping gospel music across the continent. “When it comes to gospel in Africa, Makoma has inspired many singers and generations. They have truly played their part in spreading the gospel of God through music,” she said, adding that the group’s impact has influenced careers in Uganda and beyond.
Ntate predicts that the upcoming concert (March 6 at Kololo Independence Grounds) will be historic. “I believe this show will be legendary,” she said.
Known for their high-energy performances, Makoma is expected to deliver excellence on stage.
“They were very energetic, so I expect a powerful and excellent performance,” Ntate added, expressing gratitude that the group to choose to perform in Uganda. “I thank God they are coming to Uganda to share their gift, talent and gospel with the people. I expect nothing but excellence and if I were in Uganda, it’s a show that I would love to watch and experience.”
Makoma’s show will mark the launch of year-long celebrations to mark New Vision’s 40th anniversary.
