A drive shaft also known as a propeller shaft and sometimes referred to as a transmission output shaft is a vital component of your vehicle’s drivetrain.
Ashraf Mutaasa Kafeero, a mechanic, defines a drive shaft as a component of the drive train in a vehicle to deliver torque from the transmission to the differential which then transmits this torque to the wheels to move the vehicle.
When your vehicle’s drive shaft needs repair or replacement, it is important to take it to a professional mechanic or auto repair shop as soon as possible, Kenneth Mayiga says. Mayiga is a mechanic at Risam Auto Care in the Mengo-Kakeka zone, Kampala City.
Mayiga says sometimes repairing a drive shaft can be complicated and time-consuming. It is, therefore, better to leave the job to a qualified mechanic.

Signs
According to Mayiga, a bad drive shaft causes vibrations under the vehicle whereby couplers, worn-out U-joints and carrier bearings can cause a drive shaft to vibrate. However, if these components are not serviced in time, they can seriously damage other components of a drive shaft.
Another indicator, Mayiga adds, is when the Constant Velocity joints (CV joints), commonly known to drivers as rubber boots get damaged or worn out, the grease can leak onto the inside of the wheel or other components on the underside of the vehicle as the axle turns. Without proper covering or lubrication, dirt, debris and moisture can get in which can cause excess wear and tear.
A metallic knocking noise or clicking under the vehicle also indicates a faulty drive shaft which should be repaired or replaced immediately.
“You may also hear squeaking noises, unusual clicking or rubbing under your car,” Kafeero says.
Problems when turning
Kafeero notes a worn-out drive shaft can prevent the wheel from turning properly and it causes issues when you often try to make turns which limits your overall control of the vehicle.
Other signs of a drive shaft component failure include vehicle shuddering during acceleration if you experience shaking when accelerating from a low speed or stop position. A failing universal joint or a bad centre bearing inside a drive shaft can cause hesitant acceleration.
Bad universal joint movement, when a U-joint on your drive shaft is turning too fast or not turning, it might be a problem with your vehicle’s drive shaft. Whether the U-joint is not stable or the bearing cap seals may have rust.
Also, Mayiga adds a loud clunking noise especially when you are shifting gears, difficulty steering and uneven tyre wear.
Maintenance tips
Kafeero guides when you have repaired your vehicle’s drive shaft, it is important to inspect it regularly for any signs of damage, wear or tear and replace any component that is not working properly as recommended by your mechanic.
To keep your drive shaft running smoothly, use a lubricant which is designed specifically for the drive shaft and apply it to the joints and connections which will enable your drive shaft to run efficiently without any difficulty.
As soon as possible when you notice any damage on your drive shaft make sure to repair it immediately. Ignoring it can lead to bigger problems while driving on the road and could also lead to expensive maintenance and repair.
“Repairing the damages urgently will help to ensure that your vehicle’s drive shaft is working properly for years to come,” Kafeero says.
