Filmmakers were left in schock when Uganda Communications Commission boss Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo was replaced by George William Nyombi Thembo, a change announced on November 24, 2023.
Following the announcement, filmmakers expressed their disappointment, suggesting that Kaggwa, who assumed the role in 2020, had begun to align with them and comprehend the intricacies of the film industry.
Many praised her for her online presence and prompt responses to filmmakers' queries at any time. Concerns were voiced that the new boss, alleged to have no active social media handles, might not understand Kaggwa's initiatives.
"I'm still in shock. Irrespective of the direction, we, as film-makers, needed at least a little more of Mrs. Irene as @UCC_ED. I actually din't know how much I treasured her until I learnt of the replacement. I feel back to square one. Nevertheless, lets still hope & strive," wrote Mzee Bwanika, the Executive Secretary of Pearlwood.
"Here we go again. The Uganda film industry had somehow started to pick relevance due to the Growing bond between the Creators and @UCC_ED , the discussions and all, now we have to start again to stay relevant. We hope and Pray MR . George does not abandon us @UCC_Official,"actor Mark Agume said.
"We will always be grateful to you. A big thanks, especially from the film fraternity and family we are humbled to be apart of your regime. Kati katulinde tulabe ekidako," wrote actor Housen Mushema.
In response, Kaggwa said the newly-appointed ED has a high level of performance, expressing confidence that he would deliver his best.
She also clarified that she remains part of the commission but in a different role, focusing on the position of director - engineering and communications infrastructure.
