The annual Brave Girls Festival is a celebration of youth, purpose and power. It continued on the same path last Saturday at Kati Kati Grounds in Lugogo, Kampala.

The purpose was evident in the music, dance, and storytelling. It rotated around advocacy. It provided girls and young women with a safe space to share their stories, build confidence and discuss issues often overlooked in national conversations.

At its core, the festival aims to empower young people to take charge of their health, education and future. It also sheds light on social challenges such as teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence and limited access to reproductive health services. During the COVID-19 lockdown, for instance, Uganda recorded a surge in teenage pregnancies a stark reminder of the urgent need for continuous awareness and support.

The day wasn’t just about talk. Through the “Donate 4 Pads” campaign, attendees contributed to providing sanitary pads for girls in need. There were also condom distribution drives, mentorship talks and interactive health sessions.

On stage, the energy was unmatched. Kataleya & Kandle, Karole Kasita and Ava Peace delivered electrifying performances that carried the spirit of courage and self-expression. Hosted by Lynda Ddane, MC Evelyn and a dynamic team of MCs, the event was as lively as it was meaningful.

“This is how young people learn through experience, musi, and interaction,” said Shantal Katana, Head of Gen Z at Reach a Hand Uganda (RAHU). “Brave Girls is a space where girls can speak out and be heard without fear.”

This year’s festival also marked the International Day of the Girl Child, honouring the contributions of women and girls in health, education, and community development.
