Archbishop Ssemwogerere celebrates 68th birthday

Catholics at Queen of Peace Kiwamirembe off Entebbe road last Sunday surprised Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemogerere with a birthday cake.

The archbishop had gone to Kiwamirembe to celebrate 40th marriage anniversary of Dr Saturninus Kasozi Mulindwa (a Papal knight) and his wife, Grace Kasozi.

The Kasozis later hosted their guests to a reception at their home in Bunnamwaya-Lubowa, where the archbishop joined them. It was at the reception that the archbishop was gifted with a cake to celebrate his 68th birthday.

In his speech, the archbishop explained the circumstances surrounding his birth. “I was born on June 30, but my parents named me “Paulo” because the feast day of Peter and Paul in the Catholic Church fell on June 29. I was then baptized on July 1, so those are all days I celebrate,” he said.

The archbishop also received a plaque from the congregation of Kiwamirembe as a birthday gift.

His Pastoral service

Ssemwogerere served at St Gabriel and Michael Junior Seminary Nswanjere as a teacher, while still a Deacon between 1982 – 1983. From 1985 to 1987 he was a teacher and Vice-Rector of Nswanjere Junior Seminary.

 Later in 1987 – 1990, he was the Parish Priest of Nyenga Parish (now Lugazi diocese). In 1990, he was transferred to Christ the King Parish as Parish Priest and also a dean of Christ the King Deanery, the post he served for nine years (1990-1999). Ssemogerere served as Parish Priest of Christ the King for 18 years.                       

Fr Ssemogerere was given the title of Monsignor in 1999. He was appointed the bishop of Kasana-Luweero on March 4, 2008, and consecrated on August 23, 2008.
