“Skylanta is on the roast panel, and he is going to be as much of a villain as he will be a victim. We are there to cook each other, not to cuddle. And I'm sure he understands the assignment."

“I have spent my career telling people not to mess with Kansiime. Now, I am ready to be messed with,” says Anne Kansiime, one of the most celebrated comedians in Uganda, during an interview after a press conference recently.

Messing with her means messing with her life. “I'm at a point in my life where so much has been said about me, but never to my face. So, I would like to hear what my peers think about me if given the chance and the money to speak freely,” she said.

She elaborated that on Friday, May 9, 2025, during her Comedy Grill at the Sheraton Hotel Gardens, she has promised to deliver her ex-lover, Skylanta, to the public.

A comedy grill takes a question-and-answer format and often involves a celebrity.

“Skylanta is on the roast panel, and he is going to be as much of a villain as he will be a victim. We are there to cook each other, not to cuddle. And I'm sure he understands the assignment. In fact, if anyone is going to brutalise me on that day, it is going to be Skylanta because he knows me in a way most people don’t. So, I am scared of what ammunition he is bringing, but I'm also ready,” she says. Skylanta is Kansiime’s baby daddy.

She, however, rules out any chances of rekindling love on the show. “Just don't be expecting a proposal,” she says.

Although she refers to the show as the first of its kind in Uganda, she humbly explains that it is not really a new concept. “There is not really much you can change about the concept of a roast, maybe except the name,” she says.

“What we are doing differently is taking the best of every comedy genre and creating a show. For example, we have an opening monologue like it is done on the Saturday Night Live show in the US. We shall also have two hosts, which is unusual for a roast, and an unexpected performance. Also, it is going to be brutal, but not profane or vulgar. You will be surprised how mean people can be while sounding polite,” she adds.

Kansiime assures the public of a safe and enjoyable experience and that there will be no fighting. Past experiences have shown panellists getting heated up during such roasts.

“Everyone who signed up for this roast is fully aware of the consequences. We are all prepared to leave our feelings at home. And if anyone decides to fight, we have security to carry them out,” she warns.

The grill is set to have a long list of comedians and celebrities, including Daniel Omara, Dr. Hillary Okello, Emma Napoleon, Madrat and Chiko, Gaetano Kaggwa, and the hosts Richard Tuwangye and Deedan Muyira, among many others
