Wandegeya Junction in Kampala came to a near standstill on Wednesday night as loud music, neon lights and street dance performances drew massive crowds in an unexpected spectacle.

What began as a social media rivalry between popular dancers, Basset Fame and Uncle Mayani spilled onto the streets in a showdown. Passersby halted, and traffic slowed as two crews battled for street supremacy. The clash soon launched a nationwide dance competition. The competition is a search for the best street dance crews in Uganda.

The launch itself offered a taste of what lies ahead. Basset Fame made a dramatic entrance from the Ntinda side, timing his arrival with the traffic lights before breaking into a high-impact routine near the roadside Rolex stalls. Uncle Mayani countered with a genre-switching strategy, blending dancehall, hip-hop and amapiano to throw off his rival’s rhythm. And then, both crews merged into a dance cypher.

Renowned dancers, including Dance Mamweta and DVD Afro King, joined in, picking sides and fueling the excitement as spectators cheered and recorded.

Rather than declaring a winner, there was instead the announcement that the battle for Uganda’s best dance crew is just beginning, with auditions set to roll out in multiple cities across the country this month. It will kick off in Hoima on February 28.

“This competition is our way of celebrating the unstoppable energy of Uganda’s dance culture. Launching it with a surprise flash mob right here in Wandegeya was intentional; this is where youth culture lives, moves and sets the pace. Tusker Lite has always stood for bold self-expression, creativity, and living life in the moment. We are proud to create a platform where dance crews from can showcase their talent, represent their communities and shine on a bigger stage,” Sandra Againe, Tusker Lite brand manager.
