KAMPALA - In an era when every Tom, Dick and Harry of musicians hold anniversary concerts of sorts, the old hands have been beaten by the same bug.
Having started out in 1965 as Cranes band, and later morphing into Afrigo Band, in 1975, Afrigo is also in preparation for an anniversary concert. The big difference is that Afrigo will be marking its golden jubilee.
With many of its original founders now deceased, save for Tony Ssenkebejje and Moses Matovu, the band has never disappeared off the music scene at any one time. With a music catalogue spanning over eight albums, the band is still here.
To mark such an illustrious career, Afrigo will celebrate 50 years of making music, later in August, at a venue yet to be confirmed, in Kampala, making the band the longest-serving in Uganda, and possibly, in Africa.
In 2023, the band marked 48 years, at Kampala Sheraton Hotel, leaving their avid fans thirsty for their olden music. However, Moses Matovu, the band leader, promised a return concert in a much bigger way.
The band has become a symbol of Ugandan music, culture, and heritage, captivating audiences for decades with their timeless hits like Sikulimba, Olumbe Lw'obwavu, Maria, Abaana Ba Afrigo, Jim, Teri Mubi among many others.
This celebration will be a fitting tribute to their extraordinary legacy and contribution to African music.
Speaking about the partnership with Afrigo Band on Monday, Aly Allibhai, CEO of Talent Africa Group, expressed his excitement, saying: "It is an absolute honor to work with the legendary Afrigo Band on this historic celebration. Afrigo Band is a national treasure, and their music has united generations."
Matovu shared his thoughts on Afrigo's 50-year journey, saying, "50 years is a remarkable journey, and it is a testament to our passion, resilience, and the love of our fans. This celebration is for every person who has supported Afrigo Band throughout the years. We are excited to make history."
For fervent lovers of live music, an exclusive Afrigo band concert would be a must-attend.
