A majority of primary three pupils in Kumi District are unable to perform at the level of primary two, according to an education report conducted last year by UWEZO.

The findings were released Tuesday afternoon at Kumi Primary School, revealing that most learners struggle to complete the primary cycle.

The study, carried out in partnership with TEDO, interviewed 853 children aged 4 years and above across 15 government primary schools in the district.

Kesiron Okia, representing the District Education Office (DEO) Kumi, agreed with the report and identified high pupil-to-teacher ratios as a key challenge. The district has only 1,157 teachers for over 80,000 learners.

Parents and teachers also acknowledged that the findings reflect the reality on the ground, admitting that parents bear some responsibility for the learning gaps.

The Assistant RDC Kumi, James Akodai, said the government must do more to improve education, including building additional classrooms and recruiting more teachers.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the leaders made resolutions to address the issues, which were shared by Isaac Okia, working with TEDO.

The UWEZO report was conducted in August 2024.
