The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has announced a change in the sitting arrangement for candidates during the national exams slated for next month.
While appearing before the budget committee of parliament on Wednesday, Dan Odongo, the Executive Secretary of UNEB, said that the changes are meant to observe the Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to control the spread of Covid-19.
He said the minimum sitting distance between the candidates will increase from 1.2 metres currently provided in the regulations to 2 meters.
This will in return increase the cost of invigilation and supervision since more invigilators will be required to cover the additional rooms to be used.
He says that about 19,000 invigilators are required for Primary Leaving Examinations, 8,703 invigilators for the Uganda Certificate of Examinations and 4,747 invigilators for UACE at a unit cost of sh48,000 per day.
Odongo further explained to MPs about the need to decongest the marking centers. However, there is need to use an additional 10 marking centers to bring the total to 40 centers instead of the planned 30 marking centers.
