The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) transition examinations based on the old curriculum will be conducted at the same time as the 2024 UCE examinations based on the new curriculum from October to November 2024.

The registration process will also run alongside the normal registration for this year, Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) executive director, Dan Odongo, said in a statement issued February 27, 2024.

He said UNEB will communicate the detailed guidelines for registration.

He explained that following the Board’s engagement with District Education Officers (DEOs), the board made further consultation on the modalities for conducting the UCE transition examination under the old curriculum, originally proposed for June/July 2024.

“The Minister of Education and Sports has now advised that the period between June and July is too short for the repeaters to prepare and then sit for examination. The minister recognizes that learners who had previously registered and sat under Universal Secondary Education (USE) schools may not have the resources to pay for the examination and as such, the government should take up that responsibility. Such repeaters should therefore register from USE school close to them,” Odongo said.

Based on this development, the UCE transition examination under the old curriculum will not be conducted in June/July as had been originally envisaged. The sitting centers will also not be as earlier projected.

Odongo said that the affected persons will now be advised to register themselves in USE schools where they studied previously or those convenient to them.

The functional/existing examination halls will also register candidates as well as private schools that will have repeaters wishing to sit for the examination.
