Over 200 teachers have borrowed sh20m as part of the sh6.5b grant donated by President Yoweri Museveni to the Uganda Liberal Teachers Union (ULITU) after being trained in financial Literacy.

The ULITU Secretary General of Jackson Erima said they received a grant of sh6.6b to boost their salary incomes last year, but encountered some issues of mismanagement by two of their members.

Erima said they delayed disbursing this money because two of their members connived and withdrew sh3.7b from their SACCO account, and the case is before the Courts of law.

“Our savings had accumulated to sh7b and we had anticipated each of the registered members to borrow up to sh20m. We have streamlined our financial systems, given the past experience. Our accounts are very safe with strong measures in place, and we would want to see our members get the intended value of the money to boost the remuneration of the teachers,” Erima explained.

He made the remarks while addressing a press conference at Kigowa suburb of Kampala yesterday (August 12, 2025).

“Our members who received the funding from the SACCO were trained to manage their financial literacy, and we are sure of repayment. However, anyone is free to ask for more funding because if you borrow, it comes with a minimal profit that goes to the SACCO,” he said.

He explained that during the training, people were guided in some of the projects they can venture into.

“My appeal goes to the Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) and human resource personnel to process documents of teachers who want to join the union. So far, we have not registered any cases of malpractices from the beneficiaries since we started disbursing this money to our members in June this year,” he said.

John Murungi, the Manager of the ULITU SACCO, urged all the teachers to join ULITU SACCO across the country.

“We have streamlined membership in both the Union and SACCO. For one to be a member of the SACCO, you first of all have to apply to be a Union member. We are going to start visiting our members upcountry, starting with the Eastern region,” Murungi said.

Acting president of ULITU SACCO, Peninnah Ayebare, thanked the ULITU members for standing strong over their Union and moving in the right direction. Ayebare said that the relevant authorities are helping them to have redress over their issues in the SACCO.
