Excitement and jubilation filled the air at the Buwambo-based campus of YMCA Comprehensive Institute (YCI) as 2,257 students graduated during its 28th graduation ceremony on February 27, 2026.

Of the 2,257 graduates, 1,810 (80%) were female, while 447 (20%) were male, a clear indication of the growing participation of women in vocational and technical education.

The ceremony, held under the theme: Shaping a Skilled Future Through Vocational Education, showcased YCI’s commitment to equipping learners with practical skills to compete in an increasingly dynamic job market.

Graduates received qualifications in diverse fields, including industrial art and design, journalism, computer science, cosmetology, early childhood development, catering, fashion and design, plumbing and fitting, business, and information technology.

Character and innovation

Speaking at the ceremony, YCI chancellor Prof. James Ruyonga Nkata congratulated the graduates upon completing their studies and urged them to uphold good character as they transition into the world of work.

“Graduation is not the end, but the beginning of a greater journey. Embrace integrity, adapt to emerging technologies, and remain competitive in today’s evolving job market,” he advised.

Nkata, who also serves as the chairperson of the governing council of Uganda Management Institute (UMI), commended the institution’s staff for their dedication to academic excellence and institutional development. He also lauded the Government of Uganda for reforms in the education sector, particularly the new curriculum, which he said has systematically transformed learning and enhanced skills development across the country.

“We are focused on creating consistent creativity and innovations that address emerging needs and contribute positively to growing competitive communities,” he said.

Graduation beyond certificates

Council chairperson Roselyne Birungi reminded graduates that graduation is not merely about acquiring certificates, but about transformation and service.

“Continue to adapt, learn and grow. Attach yourselves to your families and serve them with dignity. Let your skills uplift your communities and contribute to a better society,” she said.

The institution’s principal, Herbert Mukasa, joined other leaders in congratulating Nkata upon attaining professorial status and praised the collective efforts that have enabled YCI to steadily expand its impact.

A future driven by skills

The strong female majority at this year’s graduation underscores the growing empowerment of women through vocational training. As graduates celebrated with family and friends, the message from the leadership was clear: refresh the talents acquired, embrace innovation, and shape a skilled future for Uganda and beyond.

The 28th graduation ceremony not only marked academic achievement but also highlighted YCI’s continued role in transforming lives through practical education and skills development.
