The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) says the A’level candidates will write six papers on the first day: Three in the morning (Theory of government and constitutional development Paper 5, History of Africa Paper 6 and Physics Paper 1). In the afternoon, they will write Literature in English Paper 1, Faishi ya Kiswahili Paper 1 and Physics Paper 2.

The Board adds that the candidates are expected to write their final examinations from 2,844 centres. Of the total candidates, 42,328 are sponsored by the Government under the Universal Post Level Education and Training, while 124,074 candidates are under private sponsorship. In terms of gender, 93,630 candidates are male, while 77,772 are female.

UNEB executive director Dan Odongo cautioned candidates, teachers and invigilators against involvement in examination malpractice.

“The board continues to warn all persons contemplating involvement in any form of examination malpractice. They will be dealt with in accordance with the UNEB Act,” he said. He said the penalties under the Act range from five to 10 years in jail or fines of between shillings 20 million and 40 million, or both.

Odongo last month said the exams aim to evaluate the candidates' level of accomplishment.

"It is not a goal in itself; rather, it serves to assist in positioning candidates along their career trajectories. Consequently, candidates should approach the examination calmly," he told the media.

He also revealed that the number of female candidates completing the cycle and sitting for the examination has been rising. In 2022, the number was 40,713. This number rose by 15.1% to 46,860 in 2023.
