The Government is leading efforts to better the lives of people living with deafblindness across the country, the gender ministry has said.

According to gender ministry principal rehabilitation officer Agnes Nampeera, at least 10,065 people in this category have benefited from the special grant rolled out in 2019.

The Government launched a special grant for people living with deafblindness in 2019. In this, the Government was to support interest groups of people in this category who were asked to form groups of five to 10 members from across the country. These groups each receive shillings five million to help support their livelihoods.

So far, according to Nampeera, the grant has supported up to 10,065 people. This, she says, has enabled them to access basic needs such as food, decent shelter, and healthcare.

"The Government has been supportive and will continue working hard to reach all the people living with deafblindness," Nampeera said.

She, however, asked the National Association of Deaf and Blind of Uganda (NADBU) to maximise their sensitisation efforts to include more people. This, she said, will ensure people get access to services they need.

"We want NADBU) to strengthen your sensitization to empower more people. It is important to ensure that they get help," Nampeera said.

Nampeera spoke during the NADBU annual general meeting at Spots View Hotel in Kireka on Friday, September 1, 2023.
