The alumni of Fort Portal-based Nyakasura School have officially launched a fundraising campaign in preparation for the school’s centenary celebrations set for 2026.

The event happened on Friday (September 13) at Protea Hotel Kampala and was attended by notable alumni, including politicians, business leaders, ministers, and members of the Judiciary.

Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Dr. Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu presided over the function.

"There’s hope at the end of the rope," he said, urging alumni and wellwishers to remain optimistic as they reflect on the school’s legacy and future.

Kaziimba highlighted the importance of resilience, noting that challenges can be overcome with faith and unity.

The archbishop also commended the alumni for their dedication to the school’s development and praised the leadership of the current headteacher, Rev. Balinda Richardson, for offering committed leadership at the institution.

Samuel Kazooba, the chairman of the Nyakasura Alumni Finance Committee, expressed gratitude to the archbishop for his unwavering support for Church of Uganda schools, particularly his contributions to the completion of the Church House project.

He also suggested new methods for fundraising, such as using merchant codes, to simplify donations and encourage wider participation.

He also said contributions through banks will make fundraising easier.

Mwenge South MP Aston Kajara is an old boy (OB) of Nyakasura School. During Friday's launch, he emphasized the importance of supporting schools such as his alma mater that have produced many influential figures in Uganda.

"Rural schools are the backbone of our education system, and they deserve more attention and resources from the government," he said.

Kajara encouraged fellow alumni to continue their efforts in preserving the school’s legacy and preparing for its centenary celebrations.

'Many lives transformed'

Reflecting on Nyakasura School’s achievements over the years, Rev. Balinda urged the old students to rally behind the fundraising campaign, stressing that the centenary celebrations are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase the school's rich history.

"We are not just celebrating 100 years of existence but the many lives transformed through education at this great institution," he said.

In his closing remarks, Kaziimba reiterated the importance of vision and teamwork, encouraging all alumni to contribute toward the school’s success.

“A vision bearer needs a vision supporter and implementer. Let’s come together to fulfill this vision for Nyakasura School."
