Ndejje University is taking on the third season of the Vision Group’s Ultimate University Quiz with more than just hopes of winning but with a mission to shape Uganda’s next generation of ethical and critical-thinking leaders.

Deputy vice-chancellor for academic affairs Dr Christopher Samuel Mayanja says the quiz is a valuable tool that goes beyond academics.

“This is a leadership journey and students gain critical thinking, collaboration and quick-decision making, which are exactly what modern leaders need.”

The competition, which targets to attract over 20 chartered universities across the country, is being sponsored by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and the major sponsor, the Bank of Uganda (BOU). Students face high-pressure rounds requiring teamwork, speed, and mastery of diverse subjects to perform at their best.

Speaking during the orientation session held at the university on September 18, 2025, Mayanja noted that the quiz develops the mindset and character that will help students lead in an increasingly complex world.

The competition serves as a microcosm of the challenges tomorrow’s leaders will face.

“It’s not just about facts. It’s about composure under pressure and learning to work with others toward a common goal.”

This approach, he said, mirrors real-world leadership challenges, preparing students for national and global roles.

Passion meets purpose

For Davis Lakisa, an engineering student, participating in the quiz is the culmination of a lifelong love for knowledge.

“Since childhood, I’ve loved learning. Now I get to test that knowledge and compete with the best,” he said. “I expect the competition to be tough, but I’m here to learn, win and have fun".

His excitement reflects a broader student spirit that blends competition with learning and self-growth.

Beyond the quiz

Mayanja emphasised that leadership isn’t limited to titles and it’s about action. The quiz helps students develop soft skills like communication, adaptability and strategic thinking.

“Teamwork is a pillar of leadership, and this competition brings that to the forefront,” he noted.

Ndejje’s supportive academic environment and mentorship culture continue to empower students beyond the classroom.

“To our team: we believe in you. Go show the world what Ndejje leaders can do and let your intellect and character shine.”

Cyber awareness

Alongside the quiz, UCC is using the platform to educate students on digital safety and data protection.

Macgyver Mugamba, UCC’s Manager for Data Protection and Legal Advisory, urged youth to adopt responsible digital habits.

“Cybercrime is rising, and digital safety starts with you, updating passwords, understanding privacy settings and thinking before sharing any information,” he said.

Mugamba added that knowledge of data protection gives students an edge, especially when applying for internships or leadership roles.
