The Catholic Lawyers Society International has appointed President Yoweri Museveni as the founding chancellor of Karamoja Peace and Technology University.

The University that is scheduled to open in Kotido, Karamoja sub-region is one of a series of activities that the society launched on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at St. Augustine’s Institute in Nsambya, Kampala. 

The appointment of President Museveni was announced by Kampala city lawyer and President of the Society, Severino Twinobusingye.

The Catholic Lawyers Society International is an organization consisting of Roman Catholic lawyers from all walks of life who are dedicated to the study and practice of the law and promoting justice for everyone equally around the world.

Its membership spans across five continents but with the majority found in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Nigeria, South Africa, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Singapore and the United States of America. 

Their motto is ‘Justice for all’ and it reflects their commitment to working for and promoting justice at all levels and for all people irrespective of creed or race in the world. 

The launch was preceded by a mass led by the Rt. Rev. Filippi Giuseppe, Bishop Emeritus of Kotido who is also the Society Patron.  
 
Rt. Rev. Filippi Giuseppewho was also appointed as the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the University. 

He was assisted by the Very. Rev. Msgr. Dr. Philip Lokel, the Vicar General of Kotido Catholic Diocese who is the Society Chaplain and Secretary to the Advisory Board of the University.  

President Museveni who accepted the appointment contributed sh60m towards society activities. Museveni was represented by the Vice President, Major (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, who delivered his speech. 

The function was attended by the Chief Justice, Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny – Dollo, former Prime Minister Patrick Amama Mbabazi and the chairperson of the Uganda Nationals Examinations Board, Prof. Mary Okwakol, Justice Mary okit, resident judge of Moroto, Justine Atukwasa, the assistant registrar of the high court of Mpigi and several senior judicial officers and lawyers. 

During his sermon, Bishop Giuseppe emphasized the fact that all people are equal before God. 

"Before God, there is no one more important than others, we are beloved children of God," he said, adding that before God, there is no difference between the rich and poor, powerful and powerless, those who know and those who don't know. 

Referring to the Book of Acts, Bishop Giuseppe said whoever wants to bring peace to others, must first bring peace inside himself and asked the Catholic lawyers to emphasize peace and love to one another and become messengers of the love of God. 

He asked them to emulate the disciples of Jesus by becoming peacemakers.
