Makerere lecturer's body recovered from Lake Victoria

Police say they are probing the circumstances under which a Makerere University lecturer's body was found floating on Lake Victoria.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango on Friday, May 17, 2024, identified the deceased as Julius Mugaga, 32, a lecturer at Makerere University and a resident of Kasubi Mengo, Rubaga division in Kampala.

"Jinja Road Police are investigating circumstances under which a lecturer of Makerere University, Julius Mugaga died and his body was found floating in Lake Victoria," Onyango said.

He explained that the incident was reported to police on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 12:33pm.

"The incident happened at an unknown time and place. On Thursday,  Police received information that fishermen had seen a body floating on the shores of Lake Victoria at Senene Island. According to eyewitnesses, the body was floating facing up," Onyango added.

He said Police picked this information from a WhatsApp group of Luzira.

"Police responded to the crime scene and documented it. They recorded statements from relevant witnesses. The body of the deceased was picked and brought up to Portbell for easy retrieval," he noted.

Onyango said the body was conveyed to City mortuary for postmortem.

According to Onyango, at the scene, Police recovered an Aquos mobile phone, a bank deposit slip dated May 13, 2024,  in the name of Mugaga and a pair of rubber blue sandals.

"The body was found in a decomposing state dressed in a dark and light blue T-shirt and a pair of assorted colour shorts. The relatives were identified through the missed calls in the deceased phone and one Alex  Ssebufu a biological brother identified the deceased as Mugaga," Police said.

He added that the family had reported a case of disappearance at Kawala Police Station vide SD  reference 14/15/05/2024 when the deceased went missing.

Onyango noted that inquiries into the matter continue.
