Guild presidential aspirants at Makerere University have fronted student welfare and tuition policy as central campaign issues during the 92nd guild presidential debate, highlighting growing concern over the cost of university education and living conditions on campus.

The debate that took place on March 28, 2026, at Makerere University's Main Hall provided a platform for candidates to articulate their manifestos, with a strong focus on addressing tuition challenges, improving student services, and easing the financial burden facing many learners.

The 92nd guild presidential race is highly competitive, drawing a total of 13 candidates vying for the top student leadership position. Among the prominent contenders is Gracious Kadondi of NUP and Jimmy Prince Tebakor of NRM.

Other aspirants include Mike Mujuzi, Daniel Nyaika, John Mubiru, and Cohen Atuha, underscoring the depth of competition and political engagement in this year’s race.

Another contender, Nyaika, emphasised structured engagement with university management to find sustainable solutions.

“We need practical and realistic approaches—engagement with the administration, proper planning, and policies that directly address the welfare of students,Nyaika said.

The dean of students, Dr Winifred Kabumbuli, welcomed the issue-based engagement by candidates, noting that such discussions are vital for informed student participation.

“The debate has provided an important opportunity for candidates to present their ideas on key issues affecting students, particularly tuition and welfare. We encourage all students to engage peacefully and responsibly in this electoral process, she said.

However, the debate was later disrupted by isolated incidents of disorder among sections of supporters, prompting intervention by university authorities.

The chairperson of the guild electoral commission, Maureen Owomugisha, reassured students that the commission remains committed to delivering a credible election.

“Despite the disruption, our commitment to a free, fair, and transparent election remains unwavering. We call upon all candidates and their supporters to adhere to the electoral guidelines,Owomugisha said.

Students who attended the debate expressed continued interest in the process, citing the relevance of the issues discussed.

Jonathan Ssentongo said he is looking forward to participating in the vote.

“The issues being discussed affect all of us. I am eager to vote and choose a leader who will represent students’ interests,he said.

Background

Guild elections at Makerere University are typically vibrant and highly contested, often reflecting broader debates around governance and social welfare. In recent years, concerns over tuition and the rising cost of living have become dominant themes in student politics.

This year’s election is particularly significant as it marks the first physical guild election following a suspension after the death of a student during a previous electoral period, which led to heightened safety measures and reforms in the electoral process.

Voting for the 92nd Guild president is scheduled for April 9, 2026, with university authorities and the Electoral Commission emphasising the importance of a peaceful and credible exercise.
