Singer Lydia Jazmine has appealed to the Government to address the challenge of rising HIV rates among female artistes in the music industry, exacerbated by instances where sexual favours are exchanged for career opportunities such as collaborations, songwriting and studio production,

“There have been accusations made by female artistes against various media personalities, producers, and male artistes. These accusations typically involve allegations of these individuals requesting sexual favours in exchange for helping the female artistes advance in their music careers. It’s a serious issue within the music industry and has gained significant attention in recent years with movements like Me Too bringing such issues to light," the Same Way singer said.

"I request the Government to focus special attention on such matters and put in place measures to mitigate them because the young generation is taking a wrong direction."

Jazmine, real name Lydia Nabawanuka, offered her perspective following a series of tweets by Zafaran from Swangz Avenue, who called for male artistes to maintain professionalism when collaborating with female musicians.

Jazmine affirmed that she has never given any sexual favours in exchange for music returns or been sexually harrassed in the showbiz industry.

"It's important for the industry to address and work towards creating a safer and more respectful environment for all artistes. I have been fortunate to avoid certain incidents in studios because I always travel with a dedicated team of individuals who prioritise my safety. I have heard and seen people in the music industry who are asked for sexual favours to progress in their careers, but I have not been a victim. The reason is that I have always had a team behind me. My management handles everything, so I just show up in the studio," Jazmine said.

She warned women against accepting favours, saying in this industry, there are no free things.

"I advocate for maintaining professional standards, such as paying for services, getting receipts, and keeping records of studio sessions. These practices not only help in conducting business, but also serve as evidence if legal issues arise," Jazmine said.

She believes that genuine talent and dedication will attract the right opportunities and support, without the need to compromise or accept exploitative conditions.

"Your talent speaks volumes, and if it's your time to shine, nothing can hold you back. Collaborations will naturally come to those who showcase their true abilities. Stay patient, put in the hard work, and avoid expecting instant success. Your dedication will pave the way for your journey in music," Jazmine said.

In case of exploitation, she offered young female musicians guidelines on how to handle it.

"Do not go into the studios during  night time or to work alone where there are men. Please inform the Police just in case you face challenges with the producers refusing to deliver work because they want to sleep with you first. Tell the people you are working with that you are in for business, not love. I have managed the industry for a long time because I have principles as an artiste that guide me in the industry," Jazmine said.

She emphasised the importance of mutual respect and professionalism in the music industry, urging artistes to value each other's talents and work ethic regardless of gender.
