Kumi schools closed over using same buildings

The office of the Resident District Commissioner and the municipal education department in Kumi municipality have temporarily closed Kumi Comprehensive Secondary School over allegations of operating below the required minimum standards and failing to comply with the Education Act.

Authorities say the decision followed an inspection by the education department, which identified several gaps in the school’s operations.

Municipal Education Officer Stella Atai, on March 10, 2026, said that although the school is registered with the education ministry, it has been operating without adequate teachers, with a low student population. She adds that another institution, Kumi Christian Visionary Vocational Training Institute, had also been started in the same buildings.

Kumi Resident District Commissioner John Bosco Mubito described the situation as embarrassing, noting that two schools were sharing the same buildings and dormitories, which he said is illegal and unacceptable.

He has urged parents to always verify the standards of schools before enrolling their children, instead of relying only on advertisements.

Meanwhile, the school proprietor Kokas Onyait said the institution has faced many challenges, including near closure in the past. Authorities also noted that the school currently has only one female History teacher, who is an intern and handling all classes from Senior One to Senior Four.
