Increase funding at tertiary institutions - Tutors

KAMPALA - Members of Joint Admissions Board (JAB) have asked the government to increase funding of institutions to avoid over-stretching of their budgets.

The Principle Uganda Teachers College Mbale, Paul Mulima made the call saying this will help institutions to manage their activities.

This was during the opening of the JAB selections for tertiary institutions at Uganda Institute of Communication and Information Technology (UICT) on November 9 in Kampala.

Mulima said the government should increase funding given the cost of maintaining students is now high.

He said the cost of buying practical requirements is so high, adding that students learn better if practical skills are involved.

Esther Ssekasi, who represented the Vice Chancellor Kyambogo University JAB chairperson said some institutions may not admit students to full capacity due to financial constraints.

Ssekasi said they need funding to manage the activities of the institutions due to the growing population of students.

Agnes Lumala, Academic Registrar Uganda Institute of Information and Communication Technology (UICT) thanked the government for increasing digitization at workplaces.

Lumala urged tutors to professionalise in learning information and technology skills where they offer certificates since UICT is internationally recognised.
