Founded by private entrepreneurs in 2002, the government formally took over the institution in 2015, converting it into a public university with the main campus located at Kikungiri Hill in Kabale Municipality.

Canon Mathew Rukikaire, the former Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, has been installed as the second Chancellor of Kabale University.
Founded by private entrepreneurs in 2002, the government formally took over the institution in 2015, converting it into a public university with the main campus located at Kikungiri Hill in Kabale Municipality.
In 2016, President Yoweri Museveni appointed Prof. Mondo Kagonyera as the first Chancellor of Kabale University in its new status as a public institution.

Representing President Museveni, Vice President Jessica Alupo, earlier today (March 31), presided over the inauguration of Canon Mathew Rukikaire as the new chancellor.
The institution opened its doors in 2002 as a private entity by a team which included Professor George Wilson Kanyeihamba as the founding chancellor.
