How green spaces boost learning experience for children

A school is ideally a comfortable place for learning, where children can explore and understand concepts in class.

However, there is more to learning than what children absorb during lessons. In fact, their absorption of facts and concepts may become easier because of the environment at school.

Daphine Kato, Kampala Parents School head teacher, explained the importance of a good ambience that supports the learning experience for children.

“This environment is the best. It is spacious, has greenery and good facilities,” she said.

She added that children love to play in a spacious area, where they can test their speed or agility in a space without fear of bumping into each other. That space also allows children to play freely and learn other invaluable lessons, such as teamwork, sharing, and innovation, especially when they come up with games.

At Little Muheji, a primary school in Nansana, it is evident that the green spaces are a cherished gem for the children.

In the middle of a paved space is a green garden with animal statues, which make the garden all the more attractive, especially to children.

Eternia Mbegeyedde, in P.6 at Little Muheji, spoke warmly of the green space.

“The trees beautify the place and purify the air. We enjoy the green spaces when we are having clubs time, like music, dance and drama, entrepreneurship club and football club,” she said, implying that the green space makes school a fun place to learn.
