DEATH

Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, who twice served as Uganda's education minister, has died at the age of 84.

She also served a Member of Parliament for a decade, as Mpigi district Woman MP from 2001 until 2011.

In later years, Bitamazire was the Chancellor of the Uganda Management Institute (UMI), a public, degree-awarding, tertiary institution of higher education, with accreditation equivalent to a university.

Born in 1941 in central Uganda, Bitamazire attained her secondary education at Trinity College Nabbingo, before going on to obtain a Diploma in Education from Makerere University.

She also got a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967 and a Master of Arts degree 20 years later at the same university.

Before pursuing her master's degree, Bitamazire worked as a director of the East African Harbors Corporation, which was part of the first East African Community, from 1971 to 1973.

She also served as the headteacher of the Tororo Girls School from 1971 to 1974 and later as a senior education officer in Uganda's Ministry of Education and Sports from 1974 to 1979.

She was appointed education minister in 1979, a role she took on until the following year.

From 1981 until 1996, Bitamazire was the deputy chairperson of the Teaching Service Commission and was appointed as education state minister in 1999, serving in that capacity until 2005, when she was again appointed Minister of Education and Sports.
