Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) director, Tom Magambo, has rallied a total of 1,114 secondary school teachers from eight districts of western Uganda on patriotism and socio-economic transformation.
During a lecture of opportunity, Assistant Inspector General of Police Magambo delivered to the teachers recently at Ntare School in Mbarara city.
He started off the presentation by singing patriotism songs with the teachers, who have been on a 12-day patriotism training course since August 26.
A brief statement by the CID said Magambo highlighted the historical context of Uganda’s development path and its strategic priorities to the teachers from the districts of Mbarara, Rwampara, Kazo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Isingiro and Ntungamo.
He also explained their historical mission of enhancing the Government's ongoing efforts in promoting patriotism, Pan-Africanism, strategic security, and socio-economic transformation for prosperity.
“Our historical mission is to fight poverty and ensure national stability. However, loving Uganda, East Africa, and Africa will pave the way for a prosperous Uganda,” Magambo told the teachers.
Plan for all secondary school teachers
Commissioner for the National Secretariat for Patriotic Corps (NSPC) and chief organiser of the programme, Hellen Seku, said all secondary school teachers in Uganda will undergo patriotism training for 12 days to equip them for the modern age and inculcate in them patriotism values.
She told New Vision Online that they started with secondary school teachers from the aforementioned eight districts, but the programme will cover the entire country.
“We have trained most of the learners and the headteachers. So, we want to align the level of ideology between teachers and their learners because it is like the students are more informed than the teachers nowadays,” she said.
Seku also said they want to inculcate in the teachers the norms and values of patriotism because they are the ones who stay with their children most of the time.
According to the Government, patriotism is a core value that binds the citizens of any nation together, fostering a sense of unity, love, and commitment towards their motherland.
In 2009, the President established NSPC with the mandate to develop and coordinate patriotism clubs in all post-primary schools and institutions countrywide.
It is a department under the Office of the President responsible for promotion of patriotism ideology in schools.
