Arua Diocese has announced the introduction of regional examinations for Primary Four learners in all Catholic-founded primary schools under its jurisdiction.

The announcement was made during a celebration to recognise the outstanding performance of Adjumani Girls Primary School learners in the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations.

According to the diocesan education secretary, Rev. Fr Emmanuel Asega, the regional assessments are intended to strengthen academic standards and improve both learner and teacher performance across Catholic-founded schools in the region.

Asega explained that the examinations, which will begin this academic year, will cover core subjects in order to identify gaps among teachers and monitor learners’ progress before they reach Primary Seven.

"As a diocese from this year, all the P4 pupils will have end of year exams from the diocese", he said.

"These regional examinations will help measure the learning outcomes and also identify performance gaps of the teachers so that they improve," Asega added.

The move forms part of broader efforts to enhance the quality of education in Catholic schools.

Education experts note that introducing standardised assessments at the Primary Four level could improve performance outcomes in the Primary Leaving Examinations.

Chandiga Ben, the headteacher of Cessia Primary School, a Catholic-founded school in Adjumani, said it is difficult to guarantee that the regional examinations will improve performance unless they are consistently implemented across other classes as well.

"It is not very easy to predict because some performance of learners breaks in P5 and others in P6; there is a need for consistency in assessment at all levels for effectiveness," Chandiga remarked.

Parents have been encouraged to support their children in preparation for the assessments.
