KAMPALA - Uganda's former Inspector General of Police and a member of the of the Police Authority, John Cossy Odomel, has died.
His family said Odomel passed away peacefully Tuesday morning (February 18) in India.
He served as the head of Uganda's Police Force from 1992 until 1998.
Current IGP Abbas Byakagaba announced his death.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Odomel, former IGP, 1992-1998," he said in a post on social media platform X.
Byakagaba said Odomel was "a distinguished member of Uganda Police Force who dedicated many years of service and leadership to our organization".
"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time."
Odomel's death comes four days after that of former IGP Boniface Eron Okoth Ogola at the age of 85.
Ogola, who served at the helm of the Police Force from 1981 to 1985, breathed his last on Friday (February 14) at Nakasero Hospital.
Odomel, has died five months after losing his wife, Mary Magdalene Odomel.
The cause of his death has yet to be established or announced, but a member of his family confirmed he had travelled to India for treatment.
