The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has commended the European Union for its support towards Uganda in various sectors.

"Last evening, I joined the diplomatic community and friends of Union in Uganda to celebrate European Union Day. The European Union is one of Uganda's strategic partners, especially in areas of support for refugees, education, infrastructure development, and climate change, among others," Tayebwa posted on X forgot Twitter.

" I am happy to see this relationship growing stronger, benefiting our local people through the increasing export of our agricultural products to the Union. Parliament of Uganda appreciates the partnership it has with the European Union Parliament through the Africa-EU Parliamentary Assembly where I lead the Uganda delegation and sit on the 10-member Bureau that oversees the activities of the Assembly as provided for under the Samoa Agreement," he added.

The EU has been at the forefront of funding life-saving relief such as food, shelter, medical treatment, education, and other items for refugees. In 2022, the EU allocated €34 million in humanitarian aid to Uganda.

 Since 2017, the EU has supported humanitarian action in Uganda with more than €240 million in funding.

Relations between the EU and Uganda in terms of development cooperation have been guided by the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) National Indicative Programme (NIP) 2014-2020 (11th EDF-NIP).
