_______________

Bro. Joseph Muyunga, a member of the Catholic religious institute of the Brothers of Christian Instruction (locally referred to as the Brothers of Kisubi) who died last Saturday (April 11) at the age of 56, was mysterious in death as he was in life.

His contemporaries acknowledge with awe his incredible smartness and orderliness, which even the worst weather conditions could not compromise.

Muyunga’s admirers also acknowledge him for his deep commitment to the Christian teaching ministry, to which he devoted his entire life.

Before succumbing to high blood pressure complications at Kisubi Hospital, Muyunga was a lecturer of English Language and Literature at the University of Kisubi (UniK), where he had spent eight years.

He was also a PhD candidate at Nkumba University.

Muyunga was praised by the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, the Most Rev. Paul Ssemogerere, who described him as a loyal and devoted religious who offered his life to the service of the Church, the country and the international community through education.

He paid tribute to Muyunga's commitment to intellectual formation and professional competence, the reason why he had opted to enroll for a PhD programme.

Ssemogerere’s condolence message was delivered by his Vicar General, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Edward Kalumba, who presided over the requiem mass at Mount St. Teresa Kisubi, on Entebbe Road, in Wakiso district, on Monday (April 13).

Delivering his homily, Kalumba also praised the late for his devotion to the religious institute of the Brothers of Christian Instruction as well as its charism of Christian education of children and the youth. He regretted to learn that Muyunga had passed away just one week after the death of his mother, who was buried on Easter Monday, when Muyunga was in hospital.

In spite of the mysterious and shocking manner and timing of the death of Muyunga and his mother, Kalumba urged the family members not to sink in undue anxiety, or seek answers from elsewhere, but to instead stick to the Christian faith they professed as they also kept and strengthened their trust in God’s sovereignty, omniscience, protection and unconditional providence.

He also urged Christians to pray to God to inspire many young people to join the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Instruction and continue the institute’s ministry of giving hope to the young people, who he said had lost all hope because of the various challenges they faced, particularly unemployment.

Muyunga’s flowery human qualities and achievements in the arena of Christian education were also beautifully highlighted by the institute’s Provincial Superior, Bro. Casio Aizire, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kisubi, Bro. Dr Deo Mugema, and Bro. Augustine Mugabo (a contemporary and confidant), among several others.
