The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has decided to call off girls' football at the ongoing USSSA Ball Games I national championship at Ndejje SS, Luwero.

The decision to halt the championship that was to enter the quarterfinal on Thursday was due to the national U17 Teen Cranes’ international engagement, a World Cup qualifier against Zambia next week.

According to the USSSA CEO Chris Mugisha’s letter, the last 8 teams’ meetings will be rescheduled later after the qualifier, with the championship only having classification matches starting from position 9 and going upwards, being played.

“To protect the integrity of the tournament and to ensure that the most deserving teams represent Uganda in the international games, USSSA has decided to postpone the classification games for schools contesting for number 1-8 to a later date,” Migisha said.

The CEO added that the communication takes immediate effect and that the school teams whose players were selected for national duty, immediately release the athletes to the national team camping.

Five of the quarterfinalists Kawempe, St Noa, Amus, Rines, and Uganda Martyrs had their players summoned by team coach Sheryl Botes with Sheema Girls, Boni Consilii, and Sacred Heart not having anyone summoned.

The decision was not well received by some of the team officials at the competition, who looked at FUFA as overlapping the USSSA authority in organizing school sports, but the Physical Education and Sports (PES) commissioner Rev. Can. Duncans Mugumya clarified that as a ministry, they must adhere to collaboration in their operations.

“People should know that USSSA and the ministry are happy that our products are being summoned to represent the national team and that that is what we want because we have a guideline of collaboration with different entities about talent identification and development. As a government, we shall meet the costs of the schools when this stage of the quarterfinal is arranged,” Mugumya said.

Kawempe Moslem with 8 has the most players summoned, They include goalie Ashley Nakabugo, defender Promise Kwagalakwe, midfielders Esther Nangedo, Vanessa Namazzi, Fahima Babirye, Shadia Nabirye, Monica Nanono, and striker Agnes Nabukenya.

Amus College has 7seven players who include goalkeeper Dorcus Namboozo, defender Sharlon Nambuya, midfielders Tamisi Shafiga, Asia Kakai, Mariam Namataka, Doreen Alijat, and Joyce Kaniza.

Others such as St Noa have two in goalkeeper Lillian Nakilya and striker Sylvia Kabene while Renis has midfielder Bushirah Nalunkuuma and Uganda Martyrs with midfielder Auki Kigongo.

Uganda will play the first leg of this third round away in Lusaka on May 12 before the second leg in Kampala on 17th May.

Meanwhile, all other USSSA ball games disciplines basketball, hockey, rugby 15s, badminton, table tennis, and tennis will continue and climax on Saturday.
