The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has said over 2,000 trademarks have expired and risk being permanently removed from the register.

It said this on Friday (July 11) in its official “urgent notice” to all trademark owners to renew their expired trademarks within 60 days.

“In accordance with Section 22 of the Trademarks Act, Cap 225, and Regulation 48 of the Trademarks Regulations, 2023, trademark holders have 60 days from the date of this notice to renew their expired trademark(s),” URSB said.

The bureau, which is headed by registrar general Mercy Kainobwisho, warned that “failure to do so will result in permanent removal from the register, while freeing up for use”.

It explained that once a trademark expires, you lose exclusive rights to the brand and others can legally use or register the same or a similar mark.  It also said your brand equity, market presence, and legal protections are put at risk.

“Check the status of your trademark here: https://ursb.go.ug/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Copy-of-EXPIRED-AND-REMOVED-TRADEMARKS-2025.pdf,” it told all trademark owners.

The URSB also stated that renewing your trademark ensures continued protection under the law and preserves your brand identity, competitive edge, and legal rights.

“URSB urges all companies and individuals to review their trademark status and take immediate action to protect their intellectual property,” it said in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter.
