The Uganda Bureau of Statistics has reported a slight increase in the annual headline inflation as of January 2025 at 3.6% compared to 3.3% registered in the year ended December 2024.

The increase has largely been attributed to annual core inflation which equally rose to 4.2% compared to 3.9% recorded in December 2024. Annual other foods inflation recorded 2.5% in January compared to 2.2% in December.

According to Samuel Echoku, the head of department, seasoned commodities like smoked tilapia prices increased rapidly due to scarcity in supply posting a 17.8% increase in January 2025 compared to 8.9% in December 2024.

“Some of these commodities were limited in the markets when we conducted our survey and it explains the hike in prices. I want to advise those who enjoy smoked tilapia to maybe opt for beef for now since the prices have remained the same for some time now,” Echoku noted.

New clothes prices also registered 6.2% growth in prices compared to 3.9% in December. Other notable increases were sugar and laundry bar soap. Services inflation equally increased like in the passenger transport services, hotel and lodging charges also went up to 8%.
