LONDON - Uganda showcased its growing strength in agro-processing and value addition at the recently concluded International Food and Drink Event (IFE) 2026, held from March 30 to April 1, 2026, in London, where eight exhibitors presented a wide range of agricultural and agro-processed products to global markets.

The country’s pavilion reflected both heritage and innovation, bringing together established players such as the Bugisu Cooperative Union, one of Uganda’s oldest coffee unions, and emerging producers highlighting millet, mushrooms and other products from northern Uganda.

Also featured were value-added products such as millet-based foods, dried mushrooms and other processed goods, underscoring Uganda’s shift from raw exports to finished products. (Courtesy Photo)

Exhibitors displayed a diverse portfolio, including Uganda Waragi, Kakira Sugar and Spirits, premium coffee from Inspire Africa, as well as packaged beans, groundnuts and fresh produce from FrePro.

Also featured were value-added products such as millet-based foods, dried mushrooms and other processed goods, underscoring Uganda’s shift from raw exports to finished products.

Among the standout participants was Vecolate, an emerging plant-based chocolate brand that is helping position Uganda in the premium chocolate market.

Owned by a Ugandan-Irish chocolatier, the company has expanded its reach beyond the United Kingdom into the European Union.

By investing in specialised machinery and establishing operations in Ireland, Vecolate is able to process Ugandan cocoa into high-quality chocolate for international consumers.

Officials said Vecolate’s model demonstrates how Ugandan entrepreneurs are extending the agricultural value chain, moving from exporting raw materials to producing refined, globally competitive products.

Another innovation was Grandma’s Garden, an initiative based in Luwero District that supports grandmothers raising orphaned grandchildren. Through the project, the women are supported to grow pineapples and mangoes, which are then dried and prepared for export to European markets.

Founded by Ray Boterell and his family, the initiative combines social impact with enterprise by creating sustainable income for rural households while improving the welfare and education of children under their care.

Uganda’s participation at IFE 2026 highlighted a broader push towards value addition, quality production and innovation as key drivers of growth in the agricultural sector.

The exhibition, which brings together global producers, buyers and industry players, offered a platform for Uganda to promote its products and strengthen its presence in international markets.
