Screen time surge raises eye health concerns as Kampala entrepreneur pushes preventive solutions

 

 

 

As Uganda’s digital adoption accelerates, health experts are increasingly warning about the effects of prolonged screen exposure on vision. From corporate offices to university lecture halls, smartphones and computers have become central to daily life, bringing convenience, but also growing concerns about digital eye strain.

 

 

 

 

In Kampala, entrepreneur Nelson Muyimbwa is positioning his optical enterprise as part of the response to this emerging lifestyle challenge.

 

 

 

 

Muyimbwa, founder of Nellie Shades, has built his business around optical frames designed with anti-blue light and photochromic lens technology. The approach combines visual comfort, adaptive light protection, and modern frame design.

 

 

 

 

“Many people underestimate the impact of long hours on screens,” Muyimbwa says. “Symptoms like dry eyes, headaches, and fatigue are becoming common, especially among students and young professionals.”

 

 

 

 

Digital eye strain, sometimes referred to as computer vision syndrome — is associated with extended exposure to high-energy visible (HEV) blue light emitted by phones, laptops, and LED lighting. While blue light occurs naturally, increased artificial exposure has raised concerns among eye care professionals globally.

 

 

 

 

Photochromic lenses, meanwhile, offer an added layer of adaptability. The lenses automatically darken when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays outdoors and return to clear indoors, reducing the need to switch between prescription glasses and sunglasses.

 

 

 

 

Muyimbwa says his long-term goal is not merely to sell eyewear, but to promote awareness around preventive eye health in a country where screen time continues to rise.

 

 

 

 

“As Uganda becomes more digitally connected, preventive care conversations must grow alongside technology,” he notes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Industry observers say the shift toward functional eyewear reflects a broader consumer awareness trend, where health-conscious choices increasingly influence purchasing decisions.

 

 

Through innovation and advocacy, Muyimbwa is contributing to a growing dialogue around protecting vision in Uganda’s evolving digital landscape.
