Old Mutual Investment Group has appointed former National Social Security Fund (NSSF) boss Richard Byarugaba as its new board chairman, taking over from Professor Samuel Sejjaaka.

Byarugaba brings more than three decades of experience in banking, social security and investment management across East Africa. At NSSF, he oversaw a sharp rise in assets under management from $600m to $4.7b, pushed through a digital transformation and steered the passage of the NSSF Amendment Bill, which expanded pension coverage to over 10 million workers.

His background in governance, investment oversight and risk management adds weight to his appointment. He is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, a certified public accountant in Uganda and a Level III candidate in the Chartered Financial Analyst programme.

Old Mutual said Byarugaba’s record of institutional growth, combined with his emphasis on collaboration and integrity, made him well placed to guide the group as it works to expand its reach in Uganda’s investment sector.

The company also paid tribute to outgoing chair Sejjaaka, who it credited with strengthening Old Mutual’s strategic direction and launching the country’s first dollar unit trust collective investment scheme.
